    You are unfair!
You are comparing an Advanced Operating System Used for Highly Demanding Applications (aka Linux) to Vista?

Eleftherios Kosmas makes it sound like Linux isn’t used by people at home for everyday tasks, but it is. It’s called Ubuntu. Your grandma could use Ubuntu, and Ubuntu (or a close relative like Kubuntu or Xubuntu) is what’s shown in the video.

An Advanced Operating System hahahaha Hasn’t windows been bragging about being so advanced since 3.1

Advanced as in you can update the kernel without having to spend a couple of hundred dollars and re-install all your other software.
Download, integrate and use without having to reboot (several times ! !)
Updates that download, install and you just keep on working along.

So now windows has eye candy, but if you don’t go for extreme, you have XP with a facelift and we all know under the facelift is the same old ugly hag….

I think you all have it wrong, the advanced system is Vista and XP, you people placing Linux on a high Pedestal. A correctly configured windows system can run the most demanding applications, with ease and if you want customization use NLITE, strip you windows installation down to bare bones. Get with the times windows server is equal to linux.

I’m sure beryl is a pretty slick os provided you can actually get it to work. However I have a laptop (acer) and previously had another (toshiba) and spent a whole hell of alot of hours attempting to get linux in any version to recognize all the hardware etc. Plus with the acer you can’t even get sound to work at all. Don’t get me wrong I like linux. It’s cool and very versatile. Unfortunately though its just not as complete or laptop friendly.

    Dear anonymous,

You obviously don’t know anything about what linux is. Linux, as with most other things in life, does require a touch of PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE. You don’t get behind the wheel of a car without doing driver’s ed, right? Windows is like putting car keys in the hands of a ten year old - only disaster can ensue.

Despite the point I just made, there are actually versions of Linux out there (notably Kubuntu) designed to be as idiot proof as possible. Soon, Linux will be as easy as downloading a .exe, double-clicking, and rebooting into a fully fledged Ubuntu distro. See

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/install.exe/Prototype

    for more info.

lol you just pointed out a reason why linux is doing shit because only half of the population can get it it bloody installed and working you say it don’t crash which is true.. but how can it crash when if you give it to 2 billion of the population of idiots and dont even get it running lol.. great os for programmers like me but if you want to spread the product quick they gotta make it way more user friendly i mean most time i see idiots who once they see a blue screen they shit themself and while installing my linux my brother’s who are older then me still pointed and said whats that word mean .. why do they point grub? and kernel? ain’t there anything a bit more understandable :-)

I have had linux (specifically Fedora) on all my pc-s, desktops or laptops. Sometimes it takes a little workoround to fix compatibility issues, but results are always there within your grasp. If not, it’s probably your fault.
If you’d rather pay to buy someone else’s idea of a working environment, you are absolutely free to do so. I’ll still keep playing with Linux. Why? Maybe for the same reason that has me driving a stickshift. Fun. And a feeling of superiority. Go ahead, be the first one to throw that rock at me.

Please try something before you dismiss it.

Ubuntu can be tried without even installing by using the live cd.

Download it and try it. It installs easier than Windows (but you’ve likely never installed that, instead relying on FORCE…oops, I mean preloaded versions.

My mother can use it. She’s 75 and not generally considered very technical.

And it doesn’t even need $2k worth of new hardware to run.

My Beryl on KDE/Gentoo never crashes. Granted, being Gentoo it took quite a while to set up, but it’s very stable and looks great. And it runs much faster than Windows with far less memory usage. And once it’s configured I’d argue that it’s easier than Windows to maintain.

It’s very impresive, didn’t take the staff nor the MONEY that microsoft had to spend on getting areo running, and didn’t cost him a dime for the satisfaction of having implemented a wicked free interface on a free OS! Just my 2 cents. lol

On the time factor… my Beryl rig is not *quite* as impressive as this, but from downloading the ISO of Xubuntu to a fully updated, tweaked, everything working desktop(with Beryl) took me a total of five (5) hours. This includes learning everything it took to set up and tweak Beryl.

BTW: Windows server may match several Linux servers. But we are not comparing server use, now are we? And, please, tell me what to do about those memory leaks in Windows Server…

Im sorry but Linux may be all great or whatever your trying to make it out to be (Ive never used it and probably never will), but Microsoft have the market under a tight hold and a small company incomparison to MS such as Linux isnt about to take over the market. MS is easy to install and set up, is more user friendly than what ive seen of Linux and now are getting into giving everything a fancy GUI. Almost every PC in the home, schools and businesses world wide have MS installed so people dont know any different and arent about to change to a weird (and possibly far better in some aspects) OS due to the little knowledge of PC’s your general user has, so they want to stick to what they know. All you Linux users may slate Microsoft but lets all just remember which of the two is the multi million dollar company! Im sure Linux is a perfectly good OS for what you want it to do, and at the end of the day its down to personal preferance. But your OS is never going to outdo MS so stop fighting a battle your never going to win!

And remember kids “The “Wow!” starts now!”

(please note that i never actualy said their marketing is good [damn that slogan!], I only said that they have a very tight grip on the market due to their advertising/ “indoctrination”)

-Coeus- > Research before you give your opinion. GNU/Linux has many varieties, from distributions that can be run live from a single floppy, or a cd (such as knoppix), to fully functional desktop installed to harddrive all distributions are in themselves their own operating systems with there own potentials based on what the developers had in mind GNU/Linux and open source software, IMHO is about freedom more than market really, the whole anti-trust computing filling the marketplace is dispicable, where you essentially are renting, or borrowing software, as well as the operating system you run on your own hardware, with linux you have full freedom to change whatever you want whenever you want, you can BE one of the developers if you have a problem, skip calling M$ and having them ask you to check if your power cord is pluged in and search a forum, or go to an IRC channel, some distributions do in fact offer commercial support as well though i cannot give an opinion having never used it saying linux looks hard to use to me is saying you noticed it is different than windows but havent yourself ever tried it i will say however windows does work for many every-day users who need nothing more than a few programs and run/configured through series of buttons but nowdays i believe its much more worthwile to learn what you can and/or need to to use a stable linux operating system as once everything is configured and running you can resort back to your button-only interface with millions of viruses, trojans, spyware floating though the internet windows is not going to be simpler to use because it becomes unusable too easy linux doesnt need antivirus unless you have an email server for example and scan for forein os viruses (windows) you can get the hang of a linux distro fairly simply its different but not as impossible as you may believe, try it as far as the market in my eyes its branching out, either you own whats on your harddrive (sequences of bits) or you “rent” them imagine a day when you had to pay a per-year fee to M$ to boot up your computer… ive chosen to leave that virtual-lifestyle behind whats on my computer is my own business, my own to change and use, and to give to friends whatever i want my hardware, my software, my computer i do what i want with it thats the way i like it

Just a few of my views:

    1. Remember that most people who use Vista won’t be installing it anyway. I’ve not tried Vista yet but in the Linux vs XP world, it is much easier to get new stuff working like codecs, drivers etc with XP.

My flatmates don’t really know much about computers but they have managed to get almost everything working in XP like if they download wierd media files etc.

There’s also some common stuff that just won’t work on Linux and you just have to wait for someone to write something. E.g. quicktime, my flatmates were complaining that they couldn’t watch apple movie trailers on Linux. I’m not complaining because I understand that people don’t get paid for doing this.

    2. I totally, 100% agree with Bill Gates in that if you want to get paid for working your ass off to create some software then you should (if it’s good enough to pay for)! Remember that you are giving a small amount of money to charity as well as B.G. gives quite a bit (I’m sure he could afford to give more though).

    3. I on the other hand may go to hell as I have never paid for a bit of software in my life, but that’s just something I have to live with!

    4. Games, they’re only made for windows (at the moment).

    5. If Vista is as dodgy as people are saying, it may have a huge effect on the MS desktop market share. Things could level out a bit and encourage people to make more top games for Macs and Linux.

    5. It might be good for Linux if people made commercial software for linux, like photoshop etc. Then again it might not?!

Linux’s major compatibility and usability problems come from the lack of drivers written for Linux. Sure Windows works great and is easily usable cause all the hardware has drivers. It’s not really Linux’s fault there isn’t any drivers, because it’s really up to the hardware manufacturers to make them. So don’t blame the OS when you run into hardware incompatibility.

Acctually for my needs I dont care about what you are comparing . because ur comparzion is useless . how about i have a powerful GUI interface without having a minmum user requiremnts which are privacy & compatablity. so next time get the match between vista against Linux Ubuntu with correct metrices .

At least I’m sure that my USB printer does not have a driver for Linux Ubuntu .

so finally there is still no any powerful operating system. but there is an operating system that it meets ur needs .

Having used ubuntu with beryl and vista for some time, I can honestly say, Beryl obliterates aero in every aspect. Also it flys on my 5 year old pc running beryl faster than aero does on my 2.4ghz core2duo, 4 gig of ram and 8800gts 640meg video card.

In usabilty it also destroys aero, the top right hand screen to give you a montage of the desktop is cool and my friends love it when I rotate the screen and have an XP session on another workspace.

I bought vista which was a complete waste of cash IMHO, I haven’t activated it yet so I’m thinking of flogging it on ebay installing XP for games and Ubuntu for anything else I might need my PC for.

One last thing running a pirated copy of photoshop to resize pics doesn’t constitute needing windows.

I agree with you Sweaggly. With Windows Vista having so many problems and so many vendors getting pissed at Microsoft, it gives Linux the opportunity to show how reliable of an OS Linux has become. I just can’t say enough about the greatness of the Linux OS. The level of control of the file system and simple menu that it offers is far superior to that of windows. I don’t like the windows Vista menu because the options are soburied in the menu system that it makes it not so user friendly. At work, I’ve had a difficult time networking windows XP with Vista in a lab of 30 PCs, Linux on the otherhand, worked great. At home, I decided to install Ubuntu Linux on all my desktops. My wife and daughter complaint so I left windows on the PC. I installed a dual system (windows & Linux). I had to show them the applications that are the equivalents of what they used for music, ipod, and doing their work. However, once I installed Beryl they have not gone back to Windows. They just love linux and I ask them every now and them why they don’t use windows and they tell me that Windows is Lame. Anyway, I was amazed that they liked Linux so much. They are even teaching my nephews how to use the Linux OS and they have learned how to use it. They are ages 4-7 years old. Amzing!

Windows is crap, cuz it simply doesnt meet my or everybodies demands.

Ubuntu’s 3d cube-interface, that is indeed uber awesome. But the rubber-window effects, floating dock icons, magical-pixy-dust-disolve effects…..dont seem functional to me. waste of processing and memory if you ask me.

thats why people tend to forget . Windows is targeted towards people who DONT LIKE this stuff.

yet Vista is still crap. gonna take osx for a spin

Windows comes pre-installed so you don’t have to do an install like Linux, unless of course it crashes and you need to start over.
Aeros is eyecandy, it doesn’t make anything work better. As a window user for years, I find alttab works quite well for scrolling through open windows.

I have installed Linux (Ubuntu, RedHat, SLAK), on several computers, several times and never had problems with my hardware.

I can install Ubuntu on my old 900 MHz machine and it runs, however I cant run Vista on my machine. I could try installing it and then whine and complain how it doesn’t run, it crashes, it doesn’t do all the things it advertises, the drivers don’t work, it can’t identify my hardware…. and I am sure the ads for Vista are all the Ultimate version not the XP version (oops I mean basic)

AND for the $499 cost of ultimate I could pay someone to install UBUNTU and make it dance.

As for those that say Linux will never make a serious dent, the automakers said the same thing about those funny japanese import cars and had their ass kicked in the end.

I’m a very active computer user. I’ve always used windows due to the support for gaming and the widespread use in general. But, I’m building more than just gaming computers for myself and want to explore the world of Linux based OSs. I thought I’d ask a few questions here while my copy of Ubuntu is downloading…

First, I assume that there is zero directX support for linux since it’s windows created, correct?

Second, I use a lot of Macromedia programs along with autoCAD to do different types of design. Should I expect any problems running these in linux?

What types of programs in general (besides 3D gaming) should I expect compatibility issues with?

    Thanks in advance!

  • 43
    Ralph Eastwood
    June 9th, 2007 09:01

There isn’t zero-DirectX support for linux. You can use WINE (Wine is Not An Emulator) which implements quite a bit of the windows API into Linux. This allows you to run quite a lot of windows programs, with the odd glitch/bug. You CAN run DX games with wine, though at a slight performance drop. For example Jedi Knight 2 I actually got better FPS than on windows lol :P. But some newer games will have 10-30fps drop.

However having said that, depending on your game tastes, if it is FPS, there are linux versions of UT, Q3, Wolf:ET. RPG - NWN, RTS - Savage.

    Cheers.

Haha I love it! all of a sudden windows fans got quiet! I was just introduced to ubuntu + beryl recently and Im blown away it can do all these cool effects and more compared to vista while consuming less resources than XP. And to top it off most everything I seen on beryl is not only pretty but functional to. Im so damn sick of windows and trying to keep it running and stable. I’ll keep XP around for games since thats all its good for but im switching over to LINUX!! Screw microsoft, I hope they finally get what they deserve for trying to control everyones PC’s and forcing upgrades on everyone with there costly S*** OS. Sure its the way the market goes, but Id rather have something free and work great than pay for CRAP!!! I hope MS burns!!

Ok, I was a big fan of Windows, but then I’ve always liked Linux. Key issues to remember with Linux is that in order to design software for it you have to be willing to give the source code away for free. This is why a great deal of commercial software will not be made for Linux. It can however be made for SunOS and PORTED to Linux so they can make a profit. The GNU Public License both helps and hurts the general public.

Will Linux ever overtake MS? Hard to say. Vista is a massive flop. It was hyped way more than it achieved. If they ever decide to stop support for XP it could be the nail in the coffin. I actually liked XP right off the bat when it came out. Admittedly I still say the most stable version MS came out with was 2000. With Vista, I really cannot stand it. lets see hardware compatibility issues, difficulties upgrading, exhorbant prices… Versus Linux with hardware compatibility issues(vendor related) difficulties upgrading, and FREE OS. Guess which one wins.

Linux isn’t perfect. Beryl isn’t perfect either. It took a whole lot of work to get it to work with an ATI card I had. It worked very well with an nVidia though. There are a whole bunch of free programs for linux that work as well as their expensive counterparts. For photo and logo designs I use the GIMP. It has much of the functionality of Photoshop plus some very nifty plugins.

At any rate, Vista convinced me. I removed Windows from my system and installed Linux. Linux isn’t for everyone(yet), but it is definately for me now.

i am a total linux novice. i am proficient enough though to follow wikis and user forums, and that almost always solves my problems. if your going to try linux out, you need to understand that you are going to have to invest some time in getting things working, and that you will have to solve a lot of the problems on you own.

the great thing about linux is that there is a massive support community out there that is willing to help YOU, as long as you are willing to put out a little effort.

As for beryl, i got it running in about 30 minutes flawlessly on my crappy new $500 acer laptop. it is as stable as vista and 10 times more visually impressive. theres a ton of literature out there, you just need to google stuff to find it.

I’ve got Beryl installed within 10 minutes. I had Vista. Yes it SU..ED. and why I am now an Ubuntu fan. Beryl is 10 times better and 10 times less heavier to run.

The only reason why you should want to have Windows is for playing games. But for the average adult Linux does a better job and is much cheaper.

    Conclusion:

Vista su.ks di.k, lot heavier, instable, EXPENSIVE.

Linux: Great, cheap, everything what a average person can use and needs.

I know from experience that end users benefit from using FOSS & Linux. It’s hard to screw up a working Linux install unless you are ROOT, and for the most part Viruses and other malicious software is not a problem for Linux users. Granted, gaming is not what it could be YET on ‘nix but it’s not really a priority for the community since it’s not really the intended use for a desktop computer. But it will get there eventually, especially now that it’s become so easy to get the basics such as Web, Office, etc working quickly and easily.

The beauty of Linux is that once you get it going, it stays going, and that’s all you really need to know. The END justifies the MEANS.

And it’s up to US in the Linux community to NOT BE SMUG ARROGANT PRICKS and help people out wherever possible to improve the PERCEPTION of Linux. This will not be accomplished by taking cheap jabs at Windows users will not accomplish anything except making yourself look like a fool.

Book a room at your local public library and host an Installfest. SHOW people how easy it is to make the switch, rather than just arguing about it on web forums.

Hand out copies of LiveCD distros like Slax, etc so people can see how easy desktops like KDE, Gnome, and XFCE can be to use.

Let people play with your laptop so they can experience web browsing on firefox with Wireless drivers courtesy of NDISWrapper or Madwifi, etc. (Or Ubuntu Edgy Eft which auto-detects many common wireless devices!)

And most importantly, if people are happy with Windows, LET THEM BE HAPPY. Who really cares what they use so long as you don’t have to support it!

pfff XP FTW, industry standard and sp2 vista will then rock the world over again… not many people are stupid enough to get vista now (unless they have 8800gtx + 4gb> ram). but i used windows all my life never had a problem with it and i can actually use things without having compatablity problems…

    Interesting comments.
    1. M$ employs a lot of people.
    2.Yeah, Vista apparently s*x — too bad, would’ve been nice…
3.Ubuntu IS cool! XP still pretty good OS.
4.Gamers- since u can run windows xp within ubuntu, could’nt you run games within also?
5.Ubuntu IS cool! Cool enough to have peaked my, (non-geek,total non-techie), interest in Linux.
    6.Ubuntu!

Ubuntu is the Linux distro of Windows Vista. I tried both (switched to Ubuntu after getting fed up with Vista) and decided that they were both too damn annoying to use. There’s a wide spectrum between running everything as root and having to type in a password every 5 seconds. IMO, it’s a spectrum that Ubuntu and Vista developers would do well to explore.

I’ve been using Win NT, Unix and Linux since mid 90s, programming apps for all of those as well.
I think all those loud Linux shouters are barking up the wrong tree. In the professional app world (like engineering & science) things are very different than at home.
You can’t compare open source apps like QCAD with huge PLM solutions like CATIA, Pro/Engineer, SolidEdge, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and so on. That’s like comparing the editor VI with Open Office. I’m talking about cars, airplanes, agricultural machinery, consumer electronics. Go to companies making those and you’ll find lots of NT and mostly older Unix workstations but rarely any Linux ones.
I’m trying to remind some of you that it’s not so much about Windows vs. Linux, it’s about the apps.
So mostly we HAVE to use Win at work simply because there are so few high-end Linux apps in this area. Mathematica is more like an exception to the rule.
Our small 20 people department generates licence costs of $50.000+ per year. Sure our company would love to pay $0. But then again - with working with things like QCAD is like going back to bronze ages and would put us out of business quickly.

I clearly remember Linux guys shouting out loud in 1997 at university - next year Windows will be gone. Then again next year, next year, … I’m sick of such stupid propaganda.
Linux is very good already for most home users but you’ve got to think about the big picture. If many people HAVE to use Win/MacOS at work, then they’ll probably be happy using the same at home and won’t listen to pathetic Linux shouts.
We need more big picture thinkers like Miguel de Icaza - boosting development productivity, getting more professional apps on Linux, drivers too of course.

Windows Vista is a poor excuse of a OS. Windows is still Windows, no matter what name it is. Microsoft just wants to shift people to Vista because they know it sucks ass and want to shut out everything of XP to accomplish this. Linux Ubuntu Beryl is the future of OS, Windows just takes 5 years per OS to find something new, innovative and actually useful only to fall short because other Operating Systems are already beyond that level. I can see Linux Ubuntu or any other distro become so advanced that even desktop windows will be obsolete while Microsoft is still having those same dull squared windows, same old crashes. It’s like Windows is that kid who got something cool that everybody has currently but when that popular kid Linux has something new, everybody follows and leaves Windows behind to get it in another few years.

People who say unless windows is correctly configured it would run greatly, well let me tell you something. We want a fully-functional, very stabilized, very secured, flexible and fully compatible OS that does not ask to be configured for hours and hours. You may think it’s fun but I don’t, I want to be able to turn my PC on and run with no security updates asked to be installed and nothing else. Windows Vista sucks, end of story.

    Hi,

Ubuntu graphic is amazing, but don’t you all want to go into more details of a comparison. Have a look at

    Hi,

Its a shame you all are only comparing Vista to Ubuntu Graphic. Yes, Ubuntu is killing M$ on that, but is it all? how about all the other sides that Ubuntu is better at? Looking at all the people only comparing Ubuntu graphic to Vista, it will bring people the assumption that all Ubuntu has. It got a lot more. Look at this article which compare the two and show in how many places Ubuntu has got a bite of Vista.

    http://itcomparison.com/OS/vistavsubuntu/vistavsubuntu.htm

True Vista has won few fields, but for how long would that keep them running for that expensive price !!

    enjoy,

I’m a Windows user. In my IT support job we deal with mostly Microsoft products, so I’m pretty familiar with it.
I got to say Vista is a piece of crap. It’s hardly worth updating my desktop PC and buying a flash new dual core PC with Vista on it since it will run at the same speed as my existing PC (Vista being the factor that slows it down).

My next PC is going to have Ubuntu on it. I just got to either figure how to run Visual Studio on Linux or a Virtual Machine over the top. It might be time to learn Java.

It always sucks to have Microsoft force some shit you don’t want on it. Last week I stopped by a large consumer electronics’ & appliance retailer I asked if I could buy a laptop with XP or no operating system, no luck. When I explained my issues with Vista to the salesman and pointed out that the Chinese guy in the computer shop around the corner would sell me anything I wanted the salesman admitted Vista is shit and that he doesn’t/wouldn’t run it on his home PC, under his breath he said “you be better of to go to the Chinese guy in the computer shop around the corner”.

Really inspires confidence, I appreciated the guys honesty!

( INI Kamoze - Here comes the hot stepper ) Is the name of the song
I have seen a lot of funny posts on here and then there is some great advice.
The main problem I see with some people is they have I want it to work out of the box
You can stay with Microshaft if you like and pay a fortune for the fancy box with a cheap DVD or CD in it.
If you read what people that have Linux running on their system it takes WORK or is that a dirty word.
So lets see pay for them to advertise for me to spend upwards of about $500.00 to get a system running and pay more for add ons
Or set up one that does what I want it to do for free and some work after I get it running will take the fiance for dinner and a movie I can afford it.
Oh by the way I’m doing this through Mozzilla Firefox and it works alot better than IE and it was oops FREE and its more custom than just changing my background colour on my home page Check it out for free

OK, the way I see it, windows is popular only because ppl over the world are mostly used to Windows OS(from the time of win 3.1 they had monopoly over that market), and lazy to learn something new (example:my dad has 7 yrs old mobile phone and wont change it because then he would have to learn how to use the new phone… it is same for old PC users - habbit ) but M$ stays alive because of piracy - it helps their popularity, u can download anything for windows illegaly for free and it works (most of the time), no waiting for supported programs or drivers (XP now, Vista - not yet there), games and high-end programs are made for windows. I have never-ever bought any software to use with windows or any M$ OS, if I were forced to do so I would stop using windows immediately, i mean TO PAY MONEY FOR SUCH A SHITTY OS… c’mon. The moment that M$ puts an end to piracy over their products will be the day of their doom. LINUX IS FREE!!!
There is no way they can survive if corporations are the only ones to use and pay for their OS. If majority of the PC users privately used Linux and knew how to use it, then there is no way that corporations would keep paying licences to M$ for their products, if they had workers that are used to work in a free and excellent OS such as Linux, they would switch all of the OS on their computers to Linux why pay for something when u dont have to.
Time will have to bring High-end applications to Linux, if not, not much will be able to change. Untill that day M$ will keep ruling
