Reinventing Unix Commands on the Web

One of my favorite business model suggestions for entrepreneurs is, find an old UNIX command that hasn’t yet been implemented on the web, and fix that. talk and finger became ICQ, LISTSERV became Yahoo! Groups, ls became (the original) Yahoo!, find and grep became Google, rn became Bloglines, pine became Gmail, mount is becoming S3, and bash is becoming Yahoo! Pipes. I didn’t get until tonight that Twitter is wall for the web. I love that.(source: http://radar.oreilly.com/)

Things to do immediately after installing Firefox

PluginsAdobe Flash Player
Many websites use flash for animations, banners and more. You can get Adobe Flash Player here.

Java
Its very popular, its a must have, get it here.

VLC Media Player plugin
VLC is one of my favorite players, it also has a plugin for Firefox - recommended.
Choosing your extensions:

1. Adblock Plus

Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page?
Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.

2. Forecastfox

Get international weather forecasts from AccuWeather.com, and display it in any toolbar or statusbar with this highly customizable and unobtrusive extension.

3. VideoDownloader

Download videos from Youtube, Google, Metacafe and many more.

4. Fasterfox

Performance and network tweaks for Firefox.

5. DownThemAll!

DownThemAll is all you can desire from a download manager: it features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time!

6. Foxmarks

If you use Firefox on more than one computer, you’ll want Foxmarks. Install Foxmarks on each computer, and it will work silently in the background to keep your bookmarks synchronized.

7. Tab Mix Plus

Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox’s tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more.

8. Sage

Sage is a lightweight RSS and Atom feed aggregator extension for Mozilla Firefox.

9. PDF Download

Allows to choose if you want to view a PDF file inside the browser (as PDF or HTML),
Very useful, I really hate when Acrobat Reader loads directly into Firefox.

10. Image Zoom

Adds zoom functionality for images.

11. All-in-One Sidebar

All-in-One Sidebar (AiOS) is a sidebar control, inspired by Opera’s. Click on the left edge of your browser window to open the sidebar and get easy access to all your panels.

12. CustomizeGoogle

CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhance Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam).

13. Firefox Extension Backup Extension (FEBE)

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up — It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files. Now you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers.

Configuring the extensions

Install your chosen extensions and restart Firefox.
Right after the restart you’ll need to configure some of them…
- Forcastfox will ask you for your zip code
- you will be ask to disable TabMix Session Manager and use the built-in session restore.
- Foxmarks will start its setup wizard, you should create a username if you don’t have one.

Fasterfox

Right click on the Fasterfox icon, select Options, a new window will open, make sure you have Turbo Charged selected.

If you have a good internet connection you could also enable enhanced prefeching - it will utilize idle bandwidth to silently download and cache links in the background so they may be ready for immediate display by the time you click them.

CustomizeGoogle

Lets customize CustomizeGoogle extension - click tools > Customize Google Options.
There you can set specific options to each Google service.
If you use Docs or Calendar I suggest you check the Secure (switch to https)
If you are a GMail user you can remove the invite box, the quick contact box etc. (I really hate the invite box)
You can also choose to remove the ads from most services and anonymize the Google cookie (Privacy section).

DownThemAll

DownThemAll is a really good download manager, Lifehacker has a really nice article about it.

FEBE

Lets backup our elite Firefox setup.
Tools > FEBE > FEBE Options
You can tell it to backup more than your extensions (your bookmarks, preferences, whatever).
In the
FEBE Options window, click the directory icon and select where you want to save the backups.
Once you are done with the options go to
Tools > FEBE > Perform Backup and you are done!
